Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site The Reed Farm was the first documented finding of gold in the United States. In 1799 John Reed's son found a 17-pound yellow rock in the meadow, which was later identified as a gold nugget. Tours of the underground tunnels are offered, and a visitor's center contains historical mining equipment. Picnic areas and nature trails are also on the grounds.
