A town rich in history, Concord was founded in 1796 as a compromise settlement
between two nearby towns. Today Concord remains a place dedicated to the culture
and character of Southeastern North Carolina. Visitors can explore the streets
of downtown, many of which retain their original 18th century architecture and
design. NASCAR enthusiasts will enjoy Lowe's
Motor Speedway, the first speedway to host night-time super-speedway racing.
Concord is also home to the nationally renowned Mint
Museum of Art, North Carolina's first art museum, opened in 1936. It is home
to a variety of notable American art; pre-Columbian pieces, American and European
ceramics, and American decorative arts.
Reed Gold Mine, located on the outskirts of Concord, is the first recorded
site of gold discovery in the United States. The historic site situated there
tells the fascinating story of the East Coast gold rush that began in 1799. Whether
visitors prefer the outdoors, entertainment, or history, Concord offers something
for everyone.
